Chicago/Illinois Latino Nonprofit Leadership Academy

The Chicago/Illinois Latino Nonprofit Leadership Academy (Chicago/Illinois LNLA) supported the growth of 34 Latino leaders and contributed to the sustainability of 11 Latino nonprofits (see list at right) that serve thousands of families in Chicago and throughout Illinois. These organizations provide diverse low-income communities with youth programs, education and workforce development, housing, human services focused on families and children, immigration and mediation services, and arts/culture programs.
At no cost to participants, the Chicago/Illinois LNLA provided Latino nonprofit directors, their emerging leaders and board members of 11 Latino organizations with a series of leadership workshops, on-site technical assistance, mentoring and coaching opportunities geared toward their individual organizations. These activities began in August 2009 and ended in May 2010.
Key Program Outcomes:
- 81% of organizations realized new income streams
- 55% expanded/enhanced their programs to provide greater levels of service
- 100% of organizations gained access to a broader range of leadership networks
- 100% of organizations increased their ability in the areas of fundraising, strategic planning and leadership development
- Participants established a new "community council" to represent their communities in discussions around local policy
- A Local Latino Advisory Committee is now in place as a resource to local Latino organizations and initiatives
Collaboration
TCLI collaborated with Chicago-based Latino Policy Forum, the only organization of its kind in the Chicago region with a primary focus dedicated to facilitating the inclusion of Latinos at all levels in public policy and policy decision-making processes, to plan and implement the Chicago/Illinois LNLA as the Local Latino Co-Training Partner. Together, TCLI and LPF created a 14-member Local Latino Advisory Committee that guided curriculum development and selected participants through a competitive application process.
We thank the members of the Local Latino Advisory Committee for their commitment and devotion to supporting local organizations and communities now and in the future.
TCLI is grateful to the community of local funders that supported the Chicago/Illinois LNLA -- the Marguerite Casey Foundation, the Chicago Community Trust, The Boeing Company, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation - Chicago, and J. P. Morgan Chase.
